St. Valentine´s Day
St Valentine´s Day is celebrated on 14 February. People send cards, flowers or chocolates to show their love. The love messages are often signed "Your Valentine". Why do we celebrate this day?
A legend says that St. Valentine was a famous saint. He was a priest and lived in Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II believed that married men were bad soldiers so he banned marriage. Valentine broke the new law and arranged a secret marriage. Claudius put Valentine in jail and sentenced him to death. Valentine fell in love with the jailer´s daughter who was nice to him. On the last day of his life before he was executed, Valentine sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".
